Nduduzo Makhathini presents A Decade of “Listening to the Ground”
Nduduzo Makhathini’s double-album ‘Listening to the Ground’ (2015) is a masterpiece that marks a huge shift in Makhathini’s career. He released this work during his year as a Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz. Since its release, this body of work has continued to live in Makhathini’s set lists as he travels the world. Some of the songs from this repertoire have been immortalised on dance floors, finding expression beyond the limits of jazz. One such piece is ‘King Fela’ (Yehla Moya) that has been remixed by various house DJs over the years.
While the sonic aspects of this milestone continue to inspire many around the globe, this offering also marks a huge transformation in Makhathini personal journey and spirituality. The record deals with listening-hearing-sensing one’s place in the world, their gods, worldviews and ways of knowing. This was an intentional move that Makhathini carefully crafted against a sense of exile-ness: “the challenge of not being in touch with one’s network of the divine, at least beyond my christianised upbringing.”
Needless to say that the light indeed has shined over Makhathini’s itinerary in the past 10 years of obedience to his ancestors. Makhathini gets together with his friends to return to this songbook as a way to vocalise his gratitude and that indeed he has been listening.
His set will feature Ayanda Sikade, Linda Sikhakhane and Dalisu Ndlazi. As Makhathini said “we are going to be playing in the tradition…”
