YBX:
THE RISE OF A STREET-ROOTED HIP-HOP EMPIRE
MABOPANE -In the heart of Pretoria, a revolutionary hip-hop movement was born. YBX, founded by Sima and Tsakane, has evolved from a duo to a thriving record label, nurturing young talent and pushing the boundaries of South African hip-hop.
The name YBX is derived from an old Mabopane number plate from the apartheid era, paying homage to their roots. Their music reflects their experiences, influenced by gang lifestyle, street slang, and unapologetic lyrics.
Sima and Tsakane's journey began long before their incarceration, with roots deeply embedded in the streets of Pretoria. Growing up in a tough neighborhood, they were exposed to the harsh realities of life, which would later shape their music. Their experiences, struggles, and triumphs have been the driving force behind YBX's unique sound and style.
Sima and Tsakane's journey took a dramatic turn when they were incarcerated for armed robbery. Despite the challenges they faced, their passion for music remained unwavering. Upon release in 2011, they recorded their debut track, "Bana Ba Mo Gae," inspiring aspiring rappers from Pretoria. This track marked the beginning of their musical journey, as they began to build a reputation as raw, talented, and unapologetic storytellers.
In 2019, YBX collaborated with 2 Bop on "Cap City 101," a project that showcased their unique style and cemented their position in the Pretoria hip-hop scene. By 2020, YBX transformed into a record label, providing a platform for young talent to shine. Their first mixtape, released in 2020, featured artists like 2 Bop, Puzzle, Skiiwalker, Young Toxic, and Kgosi Pharaoh (Cruze), with Corrupt (Codre) and Cassim on production.
YBX has worked with notable artists, including Berry Jive, who released "YBX TO THE MOON EP" in 2022. This project was a game-changer for YBX, as it showcased their ability to produce high-quality music that resonated with fans. After Berry Jive's incarceration, YBX dropped the "Free Berry Jive EP" with Slim Dumpie and UX Apocalypse gang, keeping Berry Jive's name alive while he was behind bars.
Today, YBX boasts over 10 rap artists under its label, including Young $toic, Thato Mathata, Gustavo, Superr, DopeModify, Master More Fire, Dese Empress, V tyrant, and JuiceMan9T3. Sima Modiga and Pholoso Ramoki (Puzzle) currently run YBX, following Tsakane's departure in early 2023. Despite the challenges they've faced, YBX remains committed to pushing the boundaries of South African hip-hop and providing a platform for young talent to shine.
YBX's latest offering, THE EVILS mixtape, reflects on the hardships they've overcome while making music. This project is a testament to their resilience and determination, featuring raw, unapologetic lyrics and production that showcases their unique style. With THE EVILS mixtape, YBX cements its position as a force to be reckoned with in the South African hip-hop scene.
YBX has received numerous accolades for their contributions to South African hip-hop. Their unique sound and style have earned them a loyal following, and they continue to inspire a new generation of artists.
YBX's impact extends beyond the music industry. They have become a beacon of hope for young people growing up in tough neighborhoods, showing them that with determination and hard work, they can achieve their dreams.
