The Market Theatre presents Fatherhood, winner of the 31st Zwakala Festival,
on stage 9–19 October 2025 in the Barney Simon Theatre. Written by Mike Dzova
and directed by Archie Oupa Matsetela under Ntshieng Mokgoro’s mentorship, the
play explores absent fathers through music, movement, and text. Following four
boys raised by single mothers, it confronts the pain of fatherlessness while

While highlighting the resilience of mothers, it reflects on intergenerational
conflict and broken homes. Artistic Director Greg Homann hails it as bold,
urgent, and true to The Market Theatre’s mission of developing authentic
community stories for the main stage.
