In the 1970s, Rodney Alcala embarked on a killing spree, luring women under
the guise of being a photographer in search of models. Despite being a
registered sex offender who had recently been released from prison, he
notoriously appeared on The Dating Game, a show that weekly featured three
hidden bachelors answering humorous questions from a female contestant who
would then choose one for an all-expenses-paid date.
Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut delves into this extraordinary true story to
explore the unsettling dynamics of gender. Kendrick not only directs but also
stars as Sheryl, a struggling actress who, upon appearing on the show, has a
chilling encounter with Alcala. While this confrontation forms the core of the
film, the narrative shifts through time, portraying Alcala’s series of
murders, with Daniel Zovatto delivering a performance that captures the
unsettling arrogance of a man who believes he can evade justice in a flawed
system.
Rather than focusing on the grisly details that often dominate true-crime
stories, Kendrick uses this case to make a sharp commentary on the ways women
are compelled to manage their interactions with men. Woman of the Hour serves
as a powerful metaphor for these uncomfortable realities, while also revealing
a grim truth: sometimes, the only way to survive in the face of male
aggression is to play along.
