The Reckoning Project: Ukraine Testifies is an initiative of Ukrainian and
international journalists, analysts, and lawyers dedicated to documenting war
crimes. It was co-founded by the Public Interest Journalism Lab in March 2022.
Ukraine-based journalists and researchers collect testimonies of witnesses of
the alleged war crimes and neutrally record them in accordance with a
methodology that makes them applicable for use in litigation. The analysts
verify them, while Ukrainian writers and documentary filmmakers create
multimedia content based on the testimonies.
Russia’s tactics partially involve overshadowing previous crimes with even
greater tragedies, as if erasing the memory of past atrocities. The project’s
team documents the story of a single tragedy—whether it’s a person, family,
street, or city—so it cannot be denied and instead becomes a document that
keeps the memory alive.
