Session 1 : UMLINDELO directed by Mbali Mashaba

This film is captivating, directed by Mbali Mashaba, a South African Creative Researcher, Film director and Film curator. She completed an Honours degree in Film and Television studies at the University of the Witwatersrand and a film residency in Gothenburg, Sweden. The film won Best Short Film at the Mashariki African Film Festival in Kigali, Rwanda. The film’s cast includes Zikhona Bali and Lungelo Madondo.

Session 2 : Why the Cattle Wait by Phumi Morare

This film is a must-watch, directed by Phumi Morare, an NAACP image Award- winning and Oscar-shortlisted director. Phumi is passionate about exploring the Black female gaze, telling intimate stories of ordinary heroes, people of colour and women. The film won Best Short Film at the 7th Edition of the Joburg Film Festival in 2025. The film’s cast includes Zikona Bali, Sive Mabuya as well as Nyaniso Dzedze.

Umlindelo : Umlindelo is centered around two sisters, mourning the loss of their father, who navigate the difference in the memories they have of him.Grief is alienating, it’s personal and it lays at the centre of Mbali Mashaba’s moving Umlindelo. Zikhona Bali and Lungelo Madondo star in this short film that follows two sisters’ relationship in how they navigate their father’s funeral in a piece that explores family dynamics, expectations and the complex act of mourning. Umlindelo, a poignant exploration of grief and memory as two sisters navigate their contrasting recollections of their deceased father. It features the following languages: isiZulu and isiXhosa.

Why the Cattle Wait : Nomvula, a goddess, returns to earth to find her human lover, Thandiwe, while shape-shifting into animals to evade detection by humans. When she finds him, she is devastated to learn he has moved on. Desperate to reclaim him, she tries to convince him to return to the eternal world before she destroys the earth. Despite her efforts, her love remains unrequited, leading her to take drastic measures. The arrival of colonial oppressors signals their doomed love. Directed by Phumi Morare, an NAACP Image Award-winning and Oscar-shortlisted South African writer/director and produced by the award winning producer & co-founder of Yellowbone Entertainment Layla Swart.
