Many philosophers have written about films. Gilles Deleuze famously wrote two volumes on cinema, arguing that is a “form of thought,” by which he means that film does not simply demonstrate philosophical themes and issues, but are themselves visual philosophies. The aim of the Philosophy Film Club is to bridge theory and practice by screening films, followed by a discussion led by a local philosopher.

The word Sirāt refers to the razor-thin, perilous bridge between heaven and hell, an unclear metaphor at the start of the film when viewers follow Luis who is travelling through southern Morocco with his son, Esteban, in search of his missing daughter. Tripping to the sounds of Kangding Ray’s original soundtrack, Luis and his son are drawn into the strange party culture of the desert, accompanied by a motley crew of dancers, haunted by spectres of war.
The film, which will be shown on Tuesday, 8 September, will be the latest discussed as part of the Philosophy Film Club, aimed at bridging theory and practice by screening films, followed by a discussion led by a local philosopher, this time Prof. Chantelle Gray from the University of Johannesburg.
Students pay R40, all other members of public pay only R80.
