Presented by The Emotional Club, an organisation founded by women, for women in the film industry, our online community exchanges film recommendations and meets to watch one of those movies in-person. In line with The Emotional Club’s goals, special focus is placed on creating personal connections through cinema.

On Heritage Day, we celebrate our unique South African cultural makeup, but during our celebrations, we are subtly reminded of what it took to have the freedom to embrace our difference. South Africa has always had a complex relationship with the past and present. This month, Her Cinema Club selected Milisuthando Bongela’s landmark essay film, Milisuthando, to share with audiences. The film offers a vital, nuanced reframing of South African memory, identity, and heritage. Milisuthando challenges audiences to view heritage not merely as inherited tradition, but as an ongoing conversation about intimacy, systemic memory, and human connection in a post-apartheid landscape. Screening this film on Heritage Day creates an intentional space for dialogue, inviting audience members to confront the complex realities of South Africa’s history while reflecting on what it truly means to heal, remember, and build a collective future together.
