When a state goes to war, do its composers go with it? Since 2022, some orchestras have dropped Russian music altogether. Some of those calls were about accountability. Others just punished a language.
Listening Spaces Vol. XI explores that question through Shostakovich’s Jazz Suites. Shostakovich was attacked by Stalin and made his own compromises. Inspired by the Bureau for Listening, we’ll ask whether slow listening can be a form of protest against fast verdicts.
