Banned from the Land is a duo consisting of storyteller Amandla Akhona and recording artist Xhanti Nokwali.
The ensemble was formed by these two artists, who have been working independently across the country, primarily in the Eastern Cape. They aim to draw attention to and explore ancestral technology and ways of being as alternatives—and even bridges—during modern times.
They find inspiration in the history, creativity, resilience, and resourcefulness of about, particularly from the Xhosa ancestors of their own immediate lineage, as well as from the Bayaka people of the Congo and beyond.
