BLOEDGROND
Join us for the opening night of BLOEDGROND, the solo exhibition by South
African contemporary artist Frank Pretorius, at De Gallerij, Pierneef’s Kraal.
Born in South Africa in 1974, Frank Pretorius discovered his passion for
drawing as a child before pursuing studies in graphic design, fine art, and
filmmaking. After a successful twenty-year career in advertising and
completing his Master of Fine Art with distinction at Newcastle University in
the UK, Frank has returned home to present this deeply personal exhibition.
BLOEDGROND explores the lasting echoes of the South African War (Boer War,
1899–1902) through a powerful series of oil paintings inspired by family
stories passed down through generations. Drawing on childhood memories of
listening to these tales around the fireplace, Frank revisits themes of loss,
resilience, destruction, and preservation.
Alongside these evocative new works created during his Master’s degree, the
exhibition also features selected wildlife paintings and earlier pieces,
offering insight into the evolution of his artistic journey.

Pierneef’s original homestead and art studio.
