Freemasonry owes its origins to medieval stonemasons who closely guarded their unique skills and only passed them down from mason to mason within their fraternal organisation. Today, the society is still going strong and enjoys an active membership from all walks of life.
So, join your guides Clare van Zweiten and Charlotte Beukes for a rare opportunity to visit the imposing Freemason Hall in Parktown where we will learn about the spread of Freemasonry in South Africa. We’ll also talk about some prominent freemasons including Lord Kitchener and Piet Retief. As we tour the stately and dignified neoclassical building, with its grand staircase and interiors, we will also discuss the temple’s famous architect, Gordon Leith, who is best known for his classicist design of official buildings in the old Transvaal. And keep an eye out for the various masonic symbols that have been incorporated into the design of the grand building.
Secure parking is available at the Life Brenthurst Hospital, on the corner of Park Lane and Princess Place in Parktown. We will meet at the far end of the parking area, which connects with the entrance to Freemason Hall.
