The heritage homes of Lower Houghton are rare sanctuaries of historical wonder, hidden behind trees and high walls that shield them from Jozi’s steady pace of redevelopment. These private residences capture a past when generous proportions, fine craftsmanship, and gracious garden settings defined the domestic architecture of Johannesburg between the first and second world wars.

The two homes we will visit are Noordhoek, now known as Houghton 1938, a beautifully preserved example of the Cape Dutch Revival style where gables and symmetry recall the Cape’s serene homesteads. And House Normandie, designed by Harold Spicer, which offers a contrasting French influence with steep roofs and elegant detailing that speak of 1930s arts and craft refinement.

So, don’t miss this rare opportunity to explore these two heritage gems with your guides Kgao Mashego and Athena Clayton. We’ll also be meeting the proud homemakers who have devoted themselves to the preservation and endurance of their properties amidst Houghton’s rapidly changing landscape.

Our morning will conclude at The Old Edwardian Society, a much-loved and long- standing Houghton institution, where tea and scones will be served on the terrace (included in the tour price).
