Keenan Meyer returns to the Basement with an offering of his latest project Reawakening released in September 2024 as UJ Arts & Culture’s Artist in Residence in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA). Reawakening complements a 2018 qualitative study conducted by Meyer on the psychology of protest through a case study exploring the psychosocial and embodied effects of South African Protest Music sung during the birth of the #FeesMustFall movement in October 2015. He examines emotion theory in the context of social movements and how protest music acts as a facilitator to these emotions. Through this phenomenological analysis of South African Protest Music, emerging themes in the work include African Nationalism, Black Consciousness, music perception, music cognition and South African spirituality.
Meyer will be joined by the all-star cast of Reawakening featuring Viwe Mkizwana on double bass, Leagan Starchild on drums with Kekelingo, Muneyi and Spartz on vocals. These dynamic artists exemplify South African musical excellence and the offering is sure to be a memorable one as we gather in song to remember, reclaim and release.
