First established by Lord Milner in 1902, King Edward VII School - fondly referred to as ‘KES’ - has adopted several different names and locations during its impressive 123-year history.

Originally named Johannesburg High School for Boys, with military men serving as the educators, KES grew exponentially in both pupils and prestige. From its beginnings in a vacant cigar factory in Kerk Street, downtown Johannesburg, to Barney Barnato’s ’Joel House’ in Yeoville, to its current grounds in Houghton Estate (first occupied in 1910), KES has been the proverbial spark for the education of young men for over a century. And, while King Edward VII School may have begun as a ‘British’ school, it has successfully adapted to the times

  • balancing both tradition and innovation to become a truly South African institution.

So, join your guides Joy Campkin-Smith and Alison Andrew for a delightful journey through the gracious grounds of KES. Architecturally, the school boasts a variety of considered styles - the quintessential Edwardian main building, an Arts and Crafts Memorial wing, an Art Deco Tuck Shop, plus an assortment of building styles each revealing something about the context in which they were built.

In addition to architectural insights, we’ll also hear the full history of the school, including tales of its teachers and notable pupils. Plus we’ll discuss the school’s presence within the dynamic political, social and cultural landscape of Johannesburg.
