Still grieving, Thethiwe searches for the place where she buried her child, Thandeka
Thandeka! is a Zulu one-woman storytelling performance featuring multiple characters. It follows a young girl whose life takes a dramatic turn after falling pregnant at 19. Rejected by her father, she leaves KwaZulu-Natal with nothing and hitchhikes to Johannesburg. A kind truck driver helps her, and a disabled couple takes her in. During the COVID-19 lockdown, she gives birth to Thandeka. Due to work, she sends her baby to her mother, but tragedy strikes during the 2021 unrest—Thandeka dies. Forced to bury her child secretly, Thethiwe later returns to give her daughter a proper resting place. The play explores love, hope, family, mental health, patriarchy, and the role of fathers.
