L Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, lived in Johannesburg for six months between 1960 and 1961. The house where he lived is a stunning example of 20th-century modernist architecture, originally designed by Frank L Jarrett for a Greek timber merchant, Manos Broulidakis, in 1951.

Today the house has been fully restored as it was during the time of L Ron Hubbard, and contains a museum built around his life, philosophy, inventions and writings. Magnificently sited on the Linksfield Ridge with a southern outlook, this stunning residence boasts its original fittings, uninterrupted views of the city, and a lovely garden with terraced lawns.

The newest exhibitions on show are a fully restored Pontiac and a Triumph motorcycle of the same vintage and model as that owned by L Ron Hubbard when he lived in Johannesburg.

So, join your guides Prof Kathy Munro and Wade & Yvonne Venter for a memorable tour to a landmark home that also covers the history of the suburb and offers some context on the challenges of life in South Africa circa 1960/61.

This is a members only tour and will be limited to 20 people. We shall be the guests of the curator, Luc Dubois, who maintains this impeccable example of mid-century modern.
