In 2025, Sempre Opera, in proud partnership with Joburg Theatre, unveils a
compelling new staging of Georges Bizet’s timeless masterpiece, Carmen,
commemorating its 150th anniversary with passion, artistry, and dramatic
intensity. This production joins opera houses worldwide in honouring one of
the most enduring works in the operatic repertoire.
Set in the sun-soaked streets of Seville, Carmen follows the fiercely
independent gypsy whose defiance of convention and pursuit of freedom spark a
tempest of love, jealousy, and fate.
With its unforgettable score—featuring the iconic “Habanera” and “Toreador
Song”—Bizet’s opera continues to enthral audiences with its emotional depth
and musical brilliance.
Directed by Riana van Vollenhoven, this fully staged production features the
MUSAE Orchestra under the baton of Daniel Keet, returning from Italy to lead
the musical direction. Performed in French with English subtitles, the
production showcases a dynamic cast of local and international talent.
