To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the death of French Composer; George Bizet, Joburg theatre and Sempre opera will present his most loved and famous opera, Carmen, joining opera houses around the globe in commemorating this anniversary.
Set in the vibrant streets of Seville, Carmen tells the story of a fiercely independent woman whose pursuit of freedom leads to explosive consequences. With unforgettable arias like the Habanera, the Toreador Song, and La fleur que tu m’avais jetée, Bizet’s score pulses with raw emotion and vivid characterization.
CAST & CREATIVE HIGHLIGHTS
• Carmen – Linette van der Merwe (mezzo-soprano) delivers a fearless and fiery portrayal of opera’s most iconic heroine.
• Don José – Stéfan Louw (tenor) captures the tormented soul of a man driven to obsession.
• Escamillo – Thabang Senekal and Croatian guest Berislav Jercovic alternate as the magnetic bullfighter.
• Micaëla – Jo-Nette LeKay brings warmth and poignancy to José’s innocent love.
Supporting roles by Letago Kekana, Eulandri Venter, Stéphanie-Claire Hansen, Sky Simelane, Chris Mostert, and Martin Bruwer ensure a richly textured ensemble.
