The Bacchae: An African Choral Ballet is a bold reimagining of Euripides’
timeless tragedy through a powerful South African lens. In a divided city
yearning for renewal, the mysterious Dionysus arrives, promising freedom,
ecstasy, and spiritual awakening. As his intoxicating presence sweeps through
Thebes, women abandon convention and a chorus of voices rises in ecstatic
defiance.
Pentheus, the rigid young ruler, vows to restore order and crush the growing
movement.
But curiosity and desire draw him dangerously close to the very force he
condemns.
Blending classical ballet, African movement, choral music and orchestral
grandeur, this world-first collaboration unites Joburg Ballet, and the
University of Johannesburg Choir. Composed by Neo Muyanga, choreographed by
Mthuthuzeli November and directed by Jay Pather, the production pulses with
urgency and contemporary resonance.
Themes of power, gender, ritual and rebellion unfold with visceral theatrical
force. As celebration turns to chaos, the line between liberation and
destruction shatters. The Bacchae is an electrifying theatrical event—sensual,
provocative and unforgettable—where ancient myth meets the heartbeat of modern
Africa.
