The Soweto Ndofoya Hiking Trail is a scenic and culturally rich route located on the periphery of Meadowlands, Soweto. Led by local hiking pioneer, Masibe Lebele, this is an unforgettable ‘kasie’ experience that you don’t want to miss.

The trail is 6.5kms long and offers hikers an opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the area while engaging with the local history and community. The trail features diverse terrains, including lush greenery, open plains, and some historical landmarks that highlight Soweto’s vibrant heritage. The walk also offers a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with one of Joburg’s iconic mine dumps!

Along the trail, hikers will enjoy panoramic views, learn about the area’s history, and experience the local flora and fauna. With a firm focus on eco- tourism and community involvement, this is a meaningful outdoor activity for nature lovers and those interested in South African culture.

Please note that this hiking tour requires a moderate degree of fitness and isn’t suitable for people with mobility impairments. Wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring along a sun hat, sunblock and drinking water.

The meeting point is Ndofoya Chillas Restaurant on the corner of Odendaal Road and Mamasilowane Street in Meadowlands Zone 1. For those who would like to travel in convoy, we will be meeting at the Sunnyside Park Hotel at 09.00 and will drive together from there (we will depart for Soweto no later than 09.15 so please don’t be late).

After the hike, you are welcome to stay on at Chilla’s Restaurant for a delicious burger and a drink (for your own account).
