Born in East London in 1942, Dr Tete Mbambisa is a legendary pianist, composer and one of the most influential figures in South African jazz. His remarkable career spans more than six decades, with acclaimed recordings including Tete’s Big Sound, Did You Tell Your Mother, Black Heroes, One for Asa and the recently released African Day.
In recognition of his immense contribution to South African jazz, he received an honorary doctorate in music from the University of Cape Town in 2023 and was inducted into the Van Toeka Living Legends Programme.
