Were poets of the 70s and 80s facing the same dilemma that poets of today are contending with? If it’s true what Nina Simone says, “an artist’s duty is to reflect the times” - then poetry is one time machine we can rely on.

“Trials of Blackness” serves us Ingoapele Madingoane and Mak Manaka in the same room. It has been 27 years since the poet and social activist, Ingoapele left this world, yet his work remains a potent reflection of our shared humanity. And instead of just responding to Ingoapele, Mak Manaka will resurrect his epic poem, Black Trial from his collection, “Africa My Beginning” while accompanied by Gontse Makhene and Lebohang Mokhela on djembe drums and DJ Skwash’s selectons.
