“Hondo Yedu” (Our Struggle) explores the complex intersections of identity, culture, and politics in post-colonial Southern Africa. The play follows two students, Kumbiraishe and Mathebe, as they navigate a challenging academic assignment on propaganda used by African leaders, while grappling with their personal identities and experiences as African citizens.
Through sharp dialogue, poetry, and movement, the characters reflect on the theme of alienation.
As the two wrestle with their assignment, they also confront larger questions about their place in society, the impact of political corruption, and the shared but often painful connections between African nations. Both humorous and deeply introspective, “Hondo Yedu” asks, “What does it mean to be connected, and at what cost?”
Through their banter, debates, and introspections, the characters reveal the struggles of their generation—caught between the promises of liberation and the harsh realities of the present.
The play ultimately challenges the audience to consider their role in shaping Africa’s future, questioning the meaning of leadership, identity, and unity in a fractured world.
Come to the Red Roof Theatre, AFDA Johannesburg, and follow directions to border crossing L29.
