The Roodepoort Dance Festival was established in 1980 at the inception of the then residing Mayor of Roodepoort, Mr. Victor Horne, whose wish it was to provide a visible public platform to exhibit the dance talents of amateur students in the city of Roodepoort. This now includes supporting and encouraging talented dancers, through prizes and bursaries, to be able to continue their dance studies.

Approximately 100 dancers from 10 Dance Studios / Schools took part in 1980. The event was held in a church hall, running for a period of 1 day only.
At present approximately 1000 dancers, from approximately 30 Dance Studios / Schools participate. This annual event is held at the Roodepoort Theatre, Roodepoort, for a period of 10-14 days.

The Committee is made up entirely of volunteers and proposes to:
• Further promote the art of dance in all forms within the city of Roodepoort, by creating a greater public awareness & appreciation of local talent.
• Maintain and / or improve the standard of dance within the city of Roodepoort and surrounds.
• Provide prizes and / or bursaries of relative value to further encourage and / or assist promising students to further their dance training with a view to becoming professional artists.

This Dance platform offers the opportunity to showcase all Dance Forms including Ballet, Spanish, Modern, Lyrical Acro, Tap, Hip-Hop, Folk Dance and Musical Theatre.
