For hundreds of years, South Africa has played an important but under- appreciated role in international politics, not least through a series of fascinating military conflicts - both within and outside our borders. And there’s no better place to get to grips with our nuanced military legacy than at the Ditsong National Museum of Military History.
First opened by Field Marshall Jan Smuts in 1947, this museum is packed with unique memorabilia, machinery and vintage weaponry. So come and explore South Africa’s military past in the company of your passionate guide, Caryl Kolk. And please bring along the whole family as the tour is tailored for younger audiences (10 -16 years), with accessible narratives and plenty of time to play on the real-life tank!
As we walk through the museum and grounds, we’ll meet key South Africans who shaped our military history, learn about interesting medals and memorabilia, visit the awe-inspiring Rand Regiments Memorial designed by Edward Lutyens, get up close to vintage uniforms and armour, and, of course, check out all the exciting planes, tanks and submarines that once served on the battlefield.
It’s the perfect outing for any military buff, and a fun and interactive morning that will delight young and old alike.
Please note: The museum’s entrance fee is included in the price. No refreshments will be on sale so please bring your own water and snacks. Bring along a hat and sun protection, especially if you want to spend some time outdoors.
