What: 📅 MANYABOLO

When:
Where: 🕳 Soweto Theatre
How much:
Manyabolo is a poignant and immersive African theatre piece that brings to
life the story of Kwamavovo, a village burdened by a mysterious curse and the
death of a man. Through the lens of three interconnected families, the
narrative explores the scarcity and symbolism of water—both as a natural and
spiritual resource. With a cast of 11 and a crew of 6, the production marries
indigenous African storytelling traditions with contemporary theatrical
techniques. Water, known in Sesotho as Manyabolo, forms both the literal and
metaphorical thread of the play.
The production uses song, dance, indigenous instruments, and ritualistic
performance to navigate themes of transformation, spiritual drought,
abundance, and healing. Like water itself, the piece shifts in form and
flow—making it a theatre experience that is both visceral and poetic. The Blue
Theatre’s capacity (120–180 seats) and its cultural significance within
Soweto’s creative landscape make it the ideal venue to host this work. We
envision a production run that not only entertains but also educates, provokes
dialogue, and builds bridges between tradition and modernity.
