Soweto Theatre proudly presents a special re-staging of the critically acclaimed musical Sarafina! In a powerful concert version that pays tribute to the enduring legacy of the Ngema family.
This Broadway-celebrated production, known for its moving storytelling and
vibrant energy, will be brought to life under the direction of the renowned
Mpho Molepo, with choreography by the dynamic Nompumelelo Gumede-Ngema.
More than just a theatrical experience, Sarafina! tells a defining story in
South Africa’s history. This concert version shines a spotlight on the courage
of the women who led the fight for freedom, making its staging during Women’s
Month especially poignant.
At its core, the production celebrates South Africa’s “she-roes,” whose
sacrifices and victories continue to inspire generations.
Originally conceived and directed by the late Dr. Mbongeni Ngema, the musical
remains one of his most enduring works. Dr. Ngema also composed and arranged
the music and lyrics, with additional songs by the legendary Hugh Masekela.
Together, they created a score that continues to stir audiences with its
passion and power.
Set at Morris Isaacson High School in Soweto, the story unfolds against the
backdrop of the 1976 student uprisings, when nearly 200,000 black learners
stood up against the injustices of apartheid’s education system. In concert
form, Sarafina! captures both the spirit of resistance and the enduring hope
born from that pivotal moment in history.
