A full-length work choreographed by MID’s Sunnyboy Motau, We Are Still
Marching was originally commissioned by The Playhouse Company in 2016 for the
Playhouse Dance Company. It featured some of MID’s professional dancers. This
work had a return season in 2017, at Moving into Dance’s 40th anniversary in
2018, and at Dance Umbrella Africa in 2019.
The piece explores the struggles faced by women in South Africa from the
apartheid era until the present day. It is a reminder of incidents such as the
first Women’s March of 1956, the Soweto uprising, the bus boycott, and the
recent mass campaigns: #FeesMustFall, # MeToo, and #thetotalshutdown, in
addition to the fact that even 32 years after the first democratic elections
in South Africa, the struggle continues and we are still marching.
The work will honour stalwarts of the women’s struggle, such as Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, Sophia Williams-de Bruyn, Bertha Gxowa, and Albertina Sisulu all other women whose name were never mentioned and who led the 1956 march of 20 000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the apartheid government requiring Black women to carry pass books as part of the pass laws.
We Are Still Marching is a magnificent celebration of women, their lives, and their commitment, and promises an exciting, unforgettable experience for all lovers of dance.
