Gauteng (For Ebenhaezer) is a bold and poetic theatre production that imagines
South Africa’s cities and neighbourhoods as members of one fractured family,
revealing the hopes, struggles, and contradictions that shape urban life. When
Gauteng and Kaapstad separate, the family begins to unravel: Hillbrow spirals
into addiction, Yeoville fades away, Maboneng is poisoned by change, Sandton
turns his back on his roots, and the youngest, Msawawa, neglects his cousin
Eskom, leaving the family in darkness.
Blending spoken word, live music, and movement, the production moves
effortlessly between humour and heartbreak to explore themes of migration,
identity, inequality, and belonging in post-apartheid South Africa. Presented
in partnership with Joburg Theatre’s Youth and Community Development (YCD)
unit, Gauteng (For Ebenhaezer) is a thought-provoking celebration of
storytelling that invites audiences to reflect on the cities we build, the
families we inherit, and the communities we have the power to restore.
