About the Album: Intlambululo: Ukuhlambulula
A deeply spiritual and reflective body of work, Intlambululo: Ukuhlambulula translates to “purification” and represents music as a form of cleansing, renewal, and rebirth. The project explores the dualities of life — grief and hope, memory and imagination — and reflects Mandisi’s ability to weave profound storytelling through intricate compositions. Each piece invites listeners into a journey of collective healing, guided by the Xhosa proverb “Umntu yinkosi ukuzazi” — one’s power lies in self-knowledge.

A Legacy of Artistry and Excellence
Born and raised in Gqeberha, Mandisi’s musical path began in the church and evolved through formal study at the University of Cape Town, where he earned both his BMus Honours in Jazz Studies and later, a Master’s degree with distinction. Over the years, he has established himself as one of South Africa’s most respected musicians — a composer, performer, and educator whose work transcends genres and generations.

Since 2006, he has toured extensively with the Isango Ensemble Theatre Company, where he serves as both associate director and musical director, and was nominated for an NAACP Award in Los Angeles for Best Musical Director. His global footprint includes a residency at the New York University Drama School in 2010 and multiple international performances at Herbie Hancock’s International Jazz Day Global Concert in 2021 and 2024.

Mandisi’s discography began with his acclaimed debut Somandla in 2018, followed by the multi-award-winning Cwaka in 2021. His music has since featured in high-profile productions including Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story and the ballet Nina: By Whatever Means, inspired by the life and activism of Nina Simone. In 2023, he toured the Mandisi Dyantyis Jazz Orchestra to sold-out venues across South Africa, continuing this success in 2025 with the launch of his “Symphonic Celebration” — a nationwide orchestral performance series that also sold out theatres around the country.

A consistent crowd favourite, Mandisi has headlined major festivals and performed at every prominent theatre in South Africa, including the unforgettable New Year’s Eve 2024 concert at the V&A; Waterfront, which drew an audience of over 100,000 people.
