Hymns for The Unfree is a night of gwijo, jazz, poetry and visual art led by Koketso, whose distinctive voice has long carried through protest, spiritual jazz and poetic collaborations. Joined by poet Makhafula Vilakazi and iPhupho L’ka Biko founder, bassist and composer Nhlanhla Ngqaqu, who serves as musical director, Koketso reimagines gwijo as a form of testimony, memory and resistance.
The evening brings together songs, improvisation, poetry and visual art, with works by leading artist Slovo Mamphaga responding to the show’s sonic and visual language. At its heart, Hymns for The Unfree is an intimate meditation on grief, liberation and ancestral memory, asking what freedom might sound like when carried through voices shaped by struggle.
