MOBU is a multidisciplinary artistic work, conceived by Simphiwe Sikhakhane
and Phuti Teresa Mojela.
Sikhakhane’s musical design and direction meets Mojela’s movement direction to
create the foundation for this collaborative devised project, with a core
performance text by Katlego Chale.
The work infuses original African traditional music, dance, storytelling,
poetry and physical theatre to present a new work about the importance of the
soil to African people.
Exploring the soil as land, as body, as earth, as history, as memory, as food,
as witness, as parent, and as compound mineral, this explorative work is a
site for the convergence of artistic disciplines underpinned by a philosophy
of African expressionism.
Music, dance, text, voice and acting coalesce to mount a dystopic world that is not bound by the limits of linear time, disrupting colonial logics to reimagine a world where the world speaks for itself, testifying against the ills of humanity.
