I Will Marry When I Want, a play originated by Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Ngugi wa Mirii, critiques societal pressures surrounding marriage and criticizes the exploitation of the poor by the wealthy elite in post-colonial in Africa.
In this adaptation by Dr Kgafela oa Magogodi, Simthembile Prince Lamla and the cast, the story revolves around Msebenzi Grootboom, a farmer struggling to maintain his land, and his family, who face pressure to marry their daughter, Bontle, into a wealthy family.
The play highlights the hypocrisy of the wealthy, who use religion and marriage to further their own interests, and the devastating consequences for those who succumb to these pressures.
Ultimately, the play calls for resistance against oppressive forces and a revolution for social change.
