Tucked away in the Wits Medical School, the little-known Adler Museum of Medicine contains a fascinating collection depicting the legacy of medicine, dentistry and pharmacy in Johannesburg.
Started by Dr. Cyril Adler as a personal collection, the museum now boasts hundreds of items of historical interest including iron lungs, leech jars, nose shapers and bleeding bowls. There are also reconstructed exhibits of a 1906 Johannesburg Pharmacy, a doctor’s surgery from 1896, a dental surgery from 1905, and a traditional herbal healer’s shop.
So, join your guides Clare and Arjen van Zwieten for a therapeutic journey through our medical heritage. Along the way, we’ll also hear about notable South African doctors and their contribution to medicine, both locally and internationally.
Meet outside the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School, where parking will be available. The museum entry fee is included in the tour price.
