“A Tour Inspired by the Spirit of ’76—A Soundtrack for the Next Rebellion
In 1976, it was the courage of youth that turned protest into revolution. Nearly 50 years later, that spirit is alive—in the chords, in the crowds, in the refusal to be quiet.
With Youth Up & Rising, Soweto Punk channels that legacy into a four-stop live tour at the beginning of Youth Month. This is more than music—it’s memory, it’s momentum, and it’s a movement in motion.
Founded by Tshepang Ramoba , musician and cultural producer best known as the drummer of BLK JKS, Soweto Punk was born from the belief that punk isn’t just a genre—it’s a mindset. One that resists, reimagines, and rebuilds.
“The youth of ’76 changed history with their defiance,” says Ramoba. “We honour them by refusing silence. By creating space for the next generation of rebels—loud, visible, and unfiltered.”
The tour brings together some of South Africa’s most compelling alternative acts—Twee Punt Plug , Aura Electric , Decay , and _Underscore —each one adding to a soundtrack of rebellion. But this isn’t just about the bands. It’s about building a platform: a space where DIY culture thrives and community leads the charge.
The journey kicks off on Thursday, 29 May at Black Labone with two bands joining their weekly show. On Friday, 30 May , we head to Smoking Kills in Melville for a night of raw sound and late-night energy. Saturday, 31 May brings a chillas to Musa Zwane Studios in Soweto, where we’ll also host a street market—R200 per stall for vendors.
The tour wraps up on Sunday, 1 June at Native Rebels in Soweto, where Twee Punt Plug , Aura Electric , Decay , _Underscore , and Yndian Mynah will all take the stage—alongside DJ sets and a jam session to close out the weekend.
Whether you’re there to rage or just hang, the invitation is the same: show up, show out, and be part of something that doesn’t wait for permission.
