Pretoria Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Schalk van der Merwe, invites you to pack your bags and join the journey to Vienna!
The City of Music was home to some of the greatest composers of all time. Beethoven left for Vienna in 1792, where he remained until his death in 1827. The overture to Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s tragedy Coriolanus flowed from Beethoven’s pen in 1804 and is a masterpiece of poignant music motifs that summarize the dramatic events leading to the tragic demise of Coriolanus.
Franz Schubert’s Tragic Symphony had its first public performance in Leipzig in 1849, 21 years after the composer’s death. Composed at the tender age of 19, the Fourth Symphony stands apart with its serious tone and mood. The development of thematic material, infused with original harmonic elements, could be called “Schubertian” and attests to Schubert’s legacy as a master of thematic development.
The orchestra’s afternoon in Vienna includes a performance of another famous resident. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart came to Vienna to elevate his career. His Horn Concerto No. 3 in E-flat major, K. 447, completed between 1784 and 1787 during Mozart’s Vienna Period, is a showpiece for accomplished French horn players. This much-loved concerto, bubbling with Viennese sparkle, will be performed by Jaco van Staden and is sure to have your feet tapping.
