Book lovers – mark your diaries for one of Johannesburg’s biggest and most beloved bumper book sales, hosted by the Friends of the Johannesburg Public Library in collaboration with the Library and Information Services of the City. Thousands of second- hand books will be on sale, with prices starting from R5!

- Address: The Headquarters of the Library Service - Unique Heritage Building at 22 Solomon Street, Braamfontein (1-2 km from 44 Stanley and Egoli Gas).
- Parking: Safely on premises. Security guards on site.

The sale is widely known for its massive bargains and diverse selection of books affording everyone the opportunity to find something suitable. On the sale tables will be art, arts and crafts, fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, Afrikaans, and Africana.
“The Friends of the Library Bumper Book Sale has become a noteworthy annual event. The fact that it runs over two days allows for people to shop without the pressure of losing out. We have seen people from all walks of life benefit from our previous sales, from book collectors and bookworms to families with kids and schools coming to stock up their own libraries,” says the Chair of the Friends, Ms. Zara Natali.
The proceeds from the book sale go towards supporting the City of Johannesburg Public Libraries and its reading programmes, namely Battle of the Books, Story Skirmish and Science Scuffle, as well as needs to improve service delivery.
The Friends of the Greater Johannesburg Public Library – An introduction In the City of Johannesburg, The Friends of the Greater Johannesburg Public Library (NPO 015202 and PBO 18/11/13/1299) was established in 1999 to assist and support libraries. The Friends is a Section 21 Company and a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO). Its primary source of income is generated through book sales. Additional funding comes from ad-hoc financial donations.
The Friends of the Library takes an active and keen interest in library activities. Their primary aim is to improve and supplement the library’s book stock. They are also involved in promoting literacy for the benefit of the City of Johannesburg communities. Its main financial support is the sponsorship for the following reading programs viz. the Battle of the Books and the Story Skirmish. They also sponsor the Information Literacy programme called the Science Scuffle. These programmes are aimed at increasing literacy levels among school children.
